Drums are a member of the percussion family. Not surprisingly, drums are
one of the oldest musical instruments and its design has not changed much.
Drums were used in the past not only for music but as a way to communicate.
Drums were used to send signals between communities. The oldest drums are
said to date back to 3000 B.C.
The shell of the drum is what the skin or membrane is stretched over. The opening of the shell is circular. However, the rest of the shell can have many different shapes – with the cylinder, bowl and truncated cone being the most popular shapes. Drums are usually played by one or two sticks or the hands. The sound that drums produce will be dependent upon its size, shape, material and thickness of the shell, position of the drum, tension and how it is struck. Drums are usually purchased in a drum kit. Percussionists who are skillful at drumming are called drummers. Drums are used in most all types of music from country to rock and they are the chosen instrument for many budding musicians. How much you will spend to purchase drums will be dependent upon the quality of the drums and the brand. A drum set for a young beginner can cost between $250-$500. There is no right or wrong drums to purchase. Drummers have their own individual preferences for drums. Just like automobiles, each person must decide which drums they feel is the best quality for the price. A young child can get by on learning how to drum by having only a hi-hat, bass drum and snare drum. However, if you want your child to truly experience drumming, you should try to purchase a full five piece drum kit. You can purchase drums new and used.
